Spring Photography in Switzerland: Blossoms, Blooms & Hidden Gems

Spring in Switzerland is a photographer’s paradise. From cherry blossoms to narcissi-covered meadows, the landscape transforms into a vibrant tapestry of colors. Here’s a guide to some of the most photogenic spots this season.

Spring in Lucerne

Cherry Blossoms: A fleeting spectacle of spring

Cherry trees are still in bloom across Switzerland, especially at elevations above 700 meters. Last weekend, I visited Weggis and Fricktal, where soft pinks and whites contrasted beautifully against mountain backdrops.

In Fricktal, the Fricktaler Chriesiwäg offers a 5km loop through cherry orchards and green meadows. It’s a popular trail, especially in mid-April when the blossoms are at their peak.

In Zug, known as “Switzerland’s cherry country,” the Chriesitelefon provides up-to-date information on bloom status. The trail from Zug to Walchwil offers stunning views of Lake Zug framed by blossoming trees.

In Weggis, I highly recommend hiking trail number 98 — it offers beautiful views and plenty of blooming trees. Alos Seebodenalp is worth exploring if you look for a good spot for sunsets!

Spring in Bern

Pink Cherry Blossoms in Bern and Zurich

While rural areas like Fricktal and Weggis are famous for their cherry orchards, Switzerland’s cities are no less impressive when it comes to cherry blossom displays — especially if you’re looking for vibrant pink varieties.

In Bern, head to the Rosengarten (Rose Garden), where cherry trees bloom with stunning pink flowers against the backdrop of the Old Town and the Aare River. It’s one of the most picturesque spots for urban spring photography.

In Zurich, the best place to catch pink cherry blossoms is at the China Garden, located near the lake. The trees around the garden explode in shades of pink during April, creating a serene and colorful atmosphere right in the city. Second popular spot is Idaplatz and streets around it. You can find out more about amount of lowers on Zurich website.

Both locations are perfect if you’re looking to mix springtime nature with historic or urban landscapes — and they’re ideal for a quick photography trip without leaving the city.

Daffodils & Narcissi: Fields of gold and white

May brings the bloom of daffodils and wild narcissi, transforming meadows into seas of yellow and white.

In the Jura region, particularly Haute-Ajoie, thousands of yellow daffodils bloom from the second half of March. It’s a sight to behold and a favorite among photographers.

Above Montreux and Vevey, the meadows are covered with wild narcissi, also known as “May snow.” Trails like the Chemin des Narcisses offer panoramic views of Lake Geneva amidst the white blooms. For bloom forecasts, visit narcisses.com.

Seewis im Prättigau, near Chur, is also a place to check for daffodils. The middle of May is the peak season there!

No rush is needed, though. These flowers are known to last for a month.

Tulips in Morges

Tulip Festival in Morges: A riot of colors

From March 28 to May 11, Morges hosts the Tulip Festival, showcasing over 140,000 flowers and nearly 350 varieties of tulips. This year’s theme, “water,” promises unique floral displays set against the backdrop of Lake Geneva.

If you miss the tulips, the Château de Vullierens offers a spectacular iris garden from mid-May to mid-June. With over 400 varieties, it’s one of Europe’s most modern iris collections, set within a 30-hectare park overlooking the lake and the Alps.

Spring in the Bernese Oberland - April

Moosegg: Panoramic vistas of the Emmental and the Bernese Oberland

At around 1,000 meters elevation, the alpine meadows near Moosegg are adorned with yellow Sonchus flowers. The area offers panoramic views of the Emmental’s rolling hills and the Bernese Alps, making it a favorite among landscape photographers.

The Moosegg Boutique Hotel provides a cozy base for exploring the region, with opportunities for gourmet dining and relaxation amidst nature.

Spring in Switzerland offers a plethora of photographic opportunities. From fleeting cherry blossoms to enduring alpine vistas, there’s something for every photographer to capture. So grab your camera and immerse yourself in the vibrant beauty of Swiss springtime.

Wild Garlic in Uetliberg, Zurich

Wild Garlic Season: White Stars and Fragrant Forest Floors in May

Another spring favorite — especially around Zurich — is the unmistakable aroma of wild garlic (Bärlauch). It usually starts blooming in April, with its season lasting until early May, depending on elevation and weather conditions. The forest floors turn lush and fragrant, creating not only a photogenic green carpet but also a culinary opportunity for foragers.

Some of the best places to experience wild garlic in bloom are:

  • Trails around the Uetliberg and Albishorn

  • Forest paths in Käferberg and Zürichberg

As you wander through these areas, the garlicky scent will guide you — and if you’re collecting some for the kitchen, make sure you’re picking the right plant. Wild garlic closely resembles lily of the valley, which is toxic. To be sure: gently tear or rub a leaf between your fingers. If it smells strongly of garlic, you’ve got the right one.

Feeling inspired? Try making your own wild garlic pesto — it’s easy and delicious. Here’s a simple recipe: Wild Garlic Pesto from FOOBY

Just don’t take too much from one place — leave enough for nature (and fellow hikers) to enjoy!
